 WE DID IT!

AFSCME Retirees

 XXXXXX –

The Social Security Administration has confirmed that retroactive benefits are being paid out, and monthly Social Security benefits are increasing for retirees impacted by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).

Find answers to key questions in our updated GPO and WEP Resource Center:

Here’s what you need to know:

If you are owed retroactive benefits, you should receive a one-time payment by the end of March, deposited directly into the bank account SSA has on file.

Your new, increased monthly benefit will begin in April 2025 (for your March benefit).

SSA will also send a mailed notice explaining your benefit change.

We fought long and hard to win this victory, and we’re not taking our eyes off the ball. The implementation of the Social Security Fairness Act is happening incrementally, but because of the ongoing chaos caused by Elon Musk and DOGE — we have to stay on top of this.

We will continue holding SSA accountable to make sure public service retirees get every dollar they’re owed — accurately and on time.

If you’re waiting for a payment, SSA has urged beneficiaries to wait until April before inquiring.

Stay informed, get answers, and take action here by visiting our updated GPO and WEP Resource Center.
